Coastal Charm Steeped in History
Just 10 minutes from Desert Springs, Villaricos is an authentic Andalusian fishing village, nestled between the Sierra Almagrera mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, and bordered by the River Almanzora. With a history dating back to the Neolithic period, and a past as a Phoenician port and a mining town in the 19th century, today it is a peaceful coastal spot brimming with authenticity.
Just a short walk from the village of Palomares and a few minutes’ drive from Villaricos, Quitapellejos Beach forms part of El Playazo, the 7-kilometre-long stretch of beach along the Almanzora coast. The section closest to Desert Springs Resort offers a peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere, with shallow waters and a palm-lined promenade. Its proximity to the shops, cafés and beach bars in Palomares makes it the perfect spot to combine a swim and a sunbathe with a stroll into the village for lunch or an ice cream.
Just 10–15 minutes from Desert Springs Resort, Vera Playa boasts over 5 km of golden sand, crystal-clear waters, family-friendly beaches with beach bars and water sports, as well as quiet areas for a stroll. To the south, the wide beaches of Garrucha stretch alongside a lively seafront promenade, perfect for combining a swim with a meal by the sea.
Around 25 minutes from Desert Springs Resort, Mojácar Playa stretches for 17 km along the Mediterranean coast, with Blue Flag beaches, family-friendly sandy shores and lively beach bars serving seafood, paella and cocktails at sunset. Among its most popular spots are Marina de la Torre Beach with its water sports, Descargador Beach with its festivals, Cantal Beach with its nightlife, and the quieter Las Ventanicas and Macenas beaches, with their natural charm.
Nature, Beaches and Tranquillity
Just 45 minutes from Desert Springs, Agua Amarga is a peaceful coastal village situated in the spectacular Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, the largest coastal protected area in Andalusia. This former fishing village retains a laid-back charm and offers golden beaches, as well as boutique shops selling fashion, jewellery and items perfect for the warm Mediterranean climate.
Less than an hour from Desert Springs Resort, the Cabo de Gata Natural Park is home to some of Spain’s most unspoilt beaches. Highlights include Mónsul Beach, with its volcanic sand and spectacular rock formations; Los Genoveses Beach, with its turquoise waters and panoramic views; and Los Muertos Beach, famous for its crystal-clear sea. The best time to visit is from March to November. As these are natural beaches with no facilities, it’s advisable to bring water, food and sun cream.
