Ryder Cup Match

Thursday 4th October saw the arrival at Desert Springs Resort of the Ryder Cup team of 12 golfers from Redbourn Golf Club and they were here on a mission: To take on, beat and gain revenge for their defeat in 2006 against 12 members of Desert Springs Golf Club in this, the second Desert Springs Ryder Cup!

The tournament commenced on Friday 5th with 6 matches, played in a Fourball better-ball format, and concluded on Saturday 6th with the 12 singles matches.  A total of 18 points were available and a score of 9 points was required to ensure that the trophy stayed at Desert Springs with Redbourn requiring 9 ½ points to claim the overall victory.

When both teams met on Thursday evening, the Redbourn team members were not holding back about their confidence that they would win this year’s event. They backed up their words with some fine play and come Friday afternoon, the teams’ scores were completed at 3 points for each!

That evening, both teams refueled in the Crocodile Club, with the low handicap team from Redbourn gaining in its confidence that it could win the following day’s singles matches.

Redbourn put up a good fight on Saturday, winning 3 matches, however the team of Desert Springs were not ready to relinquish the trophy and put in a sterling performance by winning 6 singles matches which resulted in Desert Springs achieving an impressive 12 points total!

All agreed that most matches had been very close, but there was no disguising the fact that, with a final scoreline of 12 points to 6, the home team had not only defended the trophy, more importantly they won it overall, and Club Captain, Helen Lavis, was more than happy to lift the trophy on behalf of Desert Springs at the Gala Dinner.

Redbourn have accepted their invitation to return next year for a third attempt at the trophy and with the team likely to consist of many of the same players, and in light of their progress made in the matches this year it promises to be a close tournament!
