One hundred pupils from Cuevas del Almanzora and Palomares Junior schools have spent a day at the Desert Springs Resort and Golf Club. Although intended to be educational, the fun factor was the highest priority.
The children toured of the golf course maintenance area with explanations of the range of equipment used to keep the course in immaculate condition. Then a visit to the ‘Cactus Nursery’ with Chief Naturalist, Joel Lodè, to learn about these specialised plants and how they are grown from seed to the established cacti out on the desert areas of the golf course.
Next on the agenda was the Golf Academy, where the search was on for potential new golfing talent. Following a few demonstration shots by Colin White, Head Golf Professional at Desert Springs Golf Club, the children were given the chance to hit some golf balls themselves on the world class practice facilities.
Following lunch at the Resort’s African oasis, the Crocodile Club, it was time to explore the leisure activities at the Sierra Sports and Fitness Club, including the aerobic gymnasium, games room, sand play bunkers, basketball court, tennis courts and soccer pitch before the coach ride back to school.
The Golf Academy will be holding three ‘Junior Golf Academy Open Days’ at the beginning of the summer holidays to give all children between the ages of 7 – 16 the opportunity to try golf for FREE! Golf is a great sport for the development of young people, offering both physical exercise as well as educational and social skills, implicit in the rules and etiquette of the game, and Desert Springs is very keen to attract as many local children into the sport as possible
From Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th June 2006, any and all children are invited to come along to the Desert Springs Golf Academy, opposite the Club House, at any time between 10am and 1pm and, under the supervision of a Qualified PGA Golf Professional, take their first steps towards becoming the Almanzora region’s first local champion and Spain’s next golfing superstar.
