NEW YEAR’S EVE MIXED PAIRS STABLEFORD: 31/12/20

A healthy field of twenty-eight (28) players comprising fifteen (15) members and thirteen (13) guests combining to make fourteen (14) teams competed in the New Year’s Eve Mixed Pairs Stableford.
The format for the final tournament of this year was Pairs Better Ball Stableford, held over 18-holes on the Indiana course.

The usual suspects holding their recent form demonstrated in competition play this year did not disappoint. In form Gail McKemmie-Watson teamed up with Nicola to come out victorious with an impressive score of 41 stableford points followed by the pairing of Jaki and Barry White who took second place with 38 stableford points.

In the guest category, the team of Begona Perez Gonzalez and Jose Manuel Berenguel Casas returned a score of 42 stableford points to claim first position ahead of second placed Jackie Knight and Adrian Bonilla Ramirez with 40 stableford points.

CHRISTMAS INDIVIDUAL STABLEFORD : 26/12/2020

A field of eighteen (18) players comprising fifteen (15) members and three (3) guests competed in the Christmas Individual Stableford.

The tournament format was Individual Stableford held over 18-holes on the Indiana course in glorious sunshine.

A well contested competition saw David Hinton claim the winners spot with 35 points on count back over Jaki White in second place followed by Gail McKemmie Watson in third place with 34 points.

In the guest category German Ortiz claimed first position with 26 points on countback with Stuart Minton claiming second place.

THE INDIANA MASTERS : 19 & 20/12/2020

A field of fourteen (14) players comprising ten (10) members and four (4) guests competed in the rescheduled Indiana Masters.

The tournament format was Individual Stableford held over two rounds on the Indiana course in glorious winter sunshine.

After completion of round one, Gail McKemmie-Watson led the field with a very respectful 37 points, followed by Richard Fuller and Jaki White with 34 and 32 points respectively.

As with all two-day tournaments this was going to be a marathon and not a sprint, and all was left to play for.

In round two neither Richard Fuller nor Jaki White could improve on their first-round score to pressurise the overnight leader. However, one player, visitor Ian Laider, made a surge amassing the best score of the day with 39 points to improve on their first-round score by 7 points, culminating in Ian be awarded 1st Place Visitor with 71 points.

Gail McKemmie-Watson, whilst she could not improve on her first-round score, did enough and go the job done as they say, posting a score of 31 points and a combined total of 68 points to be named Winner of The Indiana Masters. Second place was awarded to Jaki White with a combined total of 60 points, whilst Chris Mear improved on his first round score by an additional 5 points to return a score of 32 points and a combined total of 59 points to claim 3rd place on count-back from Barry White and Nicola McKemmie-Watson.

THE CONSTITUTION CUP : 06/12/2020

A field of twenty-four (24) players comprising fourteen (14) members and ten (10) guests competed in The Constitution Cup.

The tournament format was Individual Medal held over 18-holes.

A beautiful sunny day ensured perfect playing conditions on The Indiana Course.

In the Men’s category Jim Halpenny and Keith Berry both returned a net score of 70 with Keith Berry being declared the winner on count back.

The Ladies category was won by Gail McKemmie Watson retuning an impressive net score of 73.

Winner of the Federated Members category was Richard Fuller with a net score of 76 ahead of second place David Hinton on count back.

For the Guests Category, Jim Halfpenny was awarded first place with a net score of 70 and Diego Palacios Criado second position with a net score of 74.

THE PRESIDENTS CUP : 07/11/2020

It was pleasing to see the second largest field of the year of 40 players comprising 30 members and 10 guests competing in The Presidents Cup.

The tournament format was Individual Stableford held over 18-holes.

T-shirt weather in November awaited the competitors and the event proved to be a fiercely competed one, with a number of inform Members of late vying for the title.

Chris Mear played to his handicap returning a respectable score of 36 stableford points, however on this day that would only secure 3rdplace in the 1st Category with Richard Toll continuing his streak of good golf taking 2nd place in the 1st Category with 37 stableford points.

The title was decided on countback with Ian Watson returning a score of 38 stableford points, coming in the eventual winner ahead of Richard Fuller who claimed 1st place in the 1st Category.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP STABLEFORD : 25/10/2020

A field of 19 players comprising 17 members and 2 guests competed in The Club Championship Stableford.

The tournament format was Individual Stableford held over 18-holes.

Glorious weather awaited the competitors and the event proved to be a fiercely competed one, with only 4 stabelford points separating positions 1 to 8.

Duncan Boston claimed first place with 32 points, one ahead of Ian Watson on 31 points claiming second place on countback over Susan Hadden.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP : 24 & 25/10/2020

A respectful field of 20 players registered for participation in what many consider to be the most prestigious club tournament of the year to find both the Men’s and Ladies Club Champion.

The tournament format was Individual Stoke-Play held over two-days, 36-holes.

Glorious October weather greeted the players with a fair to strong breeze making play a true test of each players ability.

After round one in the Men’s category, in form Richard Toll led the field by 4 shots after posting a score of 84, ahead of second place Matthew Root who returned a score of 88. Third positioned Keith Berry posted 99 and it looked as if the competition was going to be a two-horse race.

Day two saw brilliant sunshine and no breeze, affording perfect scoring conditions.

Richard Toll was the only player to improve on his first-round score, returning a score of 82 with a combined score of 166 which would see him crowned as the Men’s Club Champion.

Matthew Root could not improve on his first-round score returning 92 and a combined total of 180, that saw him take second place ahead of Keith Berry in third place with a combined score of 199.

The Ladies Club Championship was almost a replica of the Men’s with the event being principally contested between two players, Patricia Deraedt and Jaki White.

Patricia led the way after round one with a score of 103, 3 better than Jaki on 106.

All was to play for on day two, however neither player could improve on their first-round score.

Patricia posted a second-round score of 105 two better than Jaki on 107 which meant that after the combined scores were totalled, Patricia Deraedt became the Ladies Club Champion with 208, 5 shots better than second place Jaki White with 213.

THE CLUB HANDICAP SALVER : 17 & 18/10/2020

A field of 19 players comprising 18 members and 1 guest competed in The Club Handicap Salver.

The tournament format was Individual Medal held over two-days, 36-holes.

In the Men’s category on day one only one player broke par, Philip Angus returning a very respectful score of 69.

In second position overnight was Lee Coxon on 72 followed by Peter Bielby on 73 and defending champion Richard Toll in fourth position with a score of 74.

Round two saw Philip Angus unable to repeat his first-round form, however it was moving day and we saw the championship played out by last year’s defending champion and Peter Bielby. It was Peter who was triumphant returning a second-round score of 70 to amass a total score of 143 leaving Richard Toll achieving a very respectful second position after posting a score of 72 and a total of 146. Lee Coxon after returning a score of 80, 8 worse than his first round still managed to hold onto third place on 152.

The ladies category was played out principally between Jaki White and Patricia Deraedt with only one shot separating them after the first round with scores of 75 and 76 respectively.

The second round promised to be interesting.

It was Jaki who managed to hold her nerve returning a score of 79 and a total score of 154 and become victorious holding off Patricia who returned a score of 81 and a total of 157.

CAPTAIN'S CHARITY DAY : 10/10/2020

A field of 32 players comprising 30 members and 2 guests competed in the Captain’s Charity Day.

The tournament format was Team of 2, Betterball Stableford – 18 Holes.

Whilst a Charity event, the golf was most definitely competitive with six teams all within either two or three points of the eventual winners Richard Toll and Ray Charles who amassed and impressive better-ball stableford score of 41 points.

Taking second place honours via countback were the team of Barry and Jacki White with a score of 39 stableford points, pipping the team of Marion Prevett and Irina Burnham who took third place again on countback over the team of Ian Tomlinson and Phi Angus.

The players enjoyed lunch at El Torrente restaurant after play.

 

 


 

DESERT CLASSIC : 3+4/10/2020

A field of 21 players comprising 19 members and 2 guests competed in the two-day 36-Hole Desert Classic.

The tournament format was individual stableford.

After an impressive opening round of 36 points, Philip Lockyer led the field with the joint top score of the day with Philip Angus with a number of players in close proximity.

However day 2 saw some notable changes in positioning; Philip Angus dropped away returning 24 points whilst Duncan Boston made a charge amassing 33 points, an improvement of 5 points on his first days score bringing him into third place overall, and despite consistent rounds of 31 points for both rounds by Lee Coxon resulting in second place, Phillip Lockyer held his nerve to return a score of 31 points, resulting in him achieving first place overall.

SEPTEMBER MEDAL : 26/09/2020

A field of 13 players comprising 12 members and 1 guest competed in the 18-hole September Medal.

One member in particular seems to have hit a ‘purple patch’ during the month of September. Dennis Stafford, winner of the September Stableford now adds the title of winner of the September Medal to his trophy cabinet!

Dennis returned an impressive gross score of 81, net 66 after h/cap, 2 shots better than second place David Hinton with a gross score of 79, net 68  who in turn was one shot better than third place Keith berry with gross 79, net 69

SEPTEMBER GREENSOMES : 18/09/2020

A field of 18 players comprising 17 members and 1 guest competed in the 18-hole September Greensomes.

In form Richard Fuller, winner of The Flag Competition in August partnered up with fellow member Duncan Boston and obviously gelled together very well, retuning a score of 38 Stableford points to claim 1st place.

Another in form member, Lee Coxon teamed up with Neil Halliday to finish with a respectable 35 points to claim second place just one stableford point ahead of the team of David Mathewson and Freddie Beames on 34 stableford points who just pipped 4th place Barry & Jacki White on count-back.

Within the guest category first place honours went to the team of Gustavo Taboada Penno and Keith Berry with a score of 32 stableford points.

SEPTEMBER STABLEFORD : 05/09/2020

A field of 19 players competed in the first of three scheduled Club Tournaments during September.

It was a runaway victory for Dennis Stafford, the only player in the field to better his handicap, amassing a total of 37 stableford points to claim 1st place.

Barry White claimed runners up position with 33 points followed closely by Duncan Boston, one point behind with 32 points who took third place on count back ahead of David Hadden.

Within the guest category first place honours went to Francisco Ruiz with a score of 31 stableford points.

With present COVID-19 restrictions in place there was no prize giving ceremony, however all players have been sent the results and the winners their vouchers by email.

THE FLAG : 22/08/2020

A field of 20 players comprised of 13 members and 7 visitors, competed in glorious sunshine in today’s Flag Competition.

It was a close affair for the members, only one shot separating overall Members Winner Richard Fuller with a score of 74 from 2nd and 3rd place finishers Dennis Stafford and Ian Watson with a score of 75.

Within the guest category our visitors faired very well with the first place honours going to Federico Traspaderme with a very impressive score of 64, followed by Diego Cruz-Villalon Garcia in second place with 71 and in third place with a score of 73, Santiago Escruceria Restrepo.

With present COVID-19 restrictions in place there was no prize giving ceremony, however all players have been sent the results and the winners their vouchers by email.

AUGUST STABLEFORD : 15/08/2020

Glorious weather was awaiting the field of competitors for the August Stableford.

A lower than normal number of entries only provided better odds for the opportunity of winning a prize!

Two members scored better than their Handicap, Philip Lockyer and Philip Angus, both with 38 points, however the winner due to lowest exact handicap was Philip Lockyer.

David Hinton came in third place with 31 points.

In the guest category, Juan Galvez del Hierro claimed first prize with 30 points followed by Chris Neill with 29 points.

The prize giving ceremony took place at the Crocodile Club hosted by the Resort reception.

THE SUMMER CHALLENGE CUP : 08/08/2020

Today we celebrated the first tournament at the Club in the last 5 months as a consequence of COVID-19.

The trophy was competed for in glorious weather between a field comprising 21 players with Stuart Baynham emerging victorious with 38 stableford points.

Fatima Vizcaya claimed the visitors first place with 39 points, 5 clear of second place Juan Galvez with 34 points followed by Marta Lora-Tamayo with 32 and Manuel Fajardo with 31 points.

The prize giving ceremony took place at the Crocodile Club hosted by the Resort reception.

MEMORIAL DAY TOURNAMENT : 07/03/2020

Desert Springs has hosted the "Memorial Day" tournament, as every year, and the course has looked great, in perfect playing conditions and beautiful weather.

31 players participated in this Stableford Individual competition and had to show their best skills to move up the leader board. Lee Coxon, after a long recovery from knee surgery, managed to shine above the rest with a score of 38 points, followed by Barry White with 37 points and Ian Watson with 36 points.

The prize presentation took place on the Deck and was organized by Club Captain Patricia Deraedt and Committee Member Barry White. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the competitors.

 

 


 

THE DESERT SPRINGS WALTZ : 01/03/2020

Today a field of 30 (10 teams) took to the fairways for the Desert Springs Waltz.

Cloudless sunny skies adorned The Indiana Course which was presented beautifully.Members Dennis Stafford,Ray Charles and Phillip Angus to be crowned champions with a winning team score of 74 points.

The team of Chris Mear, Chris Cole and David Smith were runners-up with 71 points.

On third position we had Barry White, Jackie White and Sue Garrod with 70 meritory points.
The winners of nearest to the pin contests were Manuel Ruiz Orozco, David Smith and Jaime Lopez respectively.
The prize giving ceremony took place in the Clubhouse terrace and was hosted by Comitee Member, Barry White.

ANDALUCIA DAY : 28/02/2020

On February 28th Desert Springs hosted the Andalucía Day Tournament, which was played by 30 players on the Indiana course under magnificent weather conditions.

It was a very tight battle until the final holes, with two players tied at the top of the leaderboard.

On countback, Jackie White finished second with 34 points and Chris Mear won the tournament and received a big applause from the audience.

As for other contests Kirby Garrod and Jackie White were the winners of the Nearest to the Pin challenge respectively

The prize presentation was held at the Club House Restaurant´s terrace hosted by Desert Springs Club Committee Member Barry White.

THE CARNIVAL SCRAMBLE : 22/02/2020

A final field of 8 teams entered the 2020 The Carnival Scramble on its 7th edition, at Desert Springs Resort.

Weather has been fantastic with clear and sunny skies and a lovely temperature of 20 degrees.

As every year this tournament is an enjoyable experience for all participants.

As you could expect from competitions played under Texas Scramble format, there were many great scores.

The winning team formed by Chris Mear,Chris Cole, David Smith and Denise Mear, returned 56 points, which were good to claim the victory on countback.The team formed by Philip Angus, Ray Charles, Dennis Stafford and David Hinton finished second with 57points, the same score of Michael Wherlock, Roger Butters, Richard Fuller and Chris Adams, who finished on the third position.

Roger Butters and Dennis Stafford won the Nearest to the Pin contests respectively.

The Prize Presentation was held at the Clubhouse after such tremendous golfing day.

 

 


 

DESERT SPRINGS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP : 8/2/2020 & 9/2/2020

 

The Desert Springs Open Championship comprised a field of 24 players, who competed in a 36-Hole Stableford format.

Desert Springs greeted all players on two sunny and beautiful mornings; the conditions of the Indiana course, as commented by many competitors, were superb.

The overall winner was Barry White after posting 71 Net points. On second place, Brent Clark-Whittle had 70 and Chris Mear completed the podium with 69 points.

THE PAST CAPTAIN´S TEAM CHALLENGE : 11/1/2020

 

Thirty players signed up to play on the PAST CAPTAIN´S TEAM CHALLENGE.

A beautiful sunny day ensured perfect playing conditions on The Indiana Course which was presented impeccably.

The 'Freddie Beames Team" consisted of Robin Allen, Jim Kendall, Brent Clark-Whittle and Sue Hadden took home the honors of the day, winning with 140 stunning points!

The prize giving ceremony took place on The Deck and was hosted by Club Captain Patricia Deraedt and presented by committee member Barry White.


 

THE EPIPHANY CHALLENGE : 6/1/2020

 

An impressive 52 players swung their clubs with intent today, in a bid to be crowned The Epiphany challenge champion!

On a beautifully sunny, calm New year’s day with the greens , as always impeccable, It was Gail Mckemmie-Watson who took the spoils!

A very close contest, she just pipped  tied second Place, Theo Goodhall & Evelio Alonso by lowest handicap as all 3 returned equal 35 points.

Congratulations to Gail, and all who participated!


 

DESERT SPRINGS COMMUNITY TROPHY : 3/1/2020

 

The First tournament of the year was held On a Beautiful crisp sunny day, 35 players across 4 communities, teed up in a bid to secure bragging rights for 2020!

The format was 6 stableford scores to count from each team.

This years spoils go to the team residing at Echo Rock, consisting of our Captain Patricia Deraedt, Norah O’ Cuilleanan ( individual womans winner), and the 3 formidable McKinnes brothers with 200 points!.
