Sixty-eight full time students accompanied by fifteen coaches and staff representing; Millfield, Bradfield, Durham, Loretto, Reeds & Wellington School, competed in the inaugural

‘Desert Springs & Millfield European Schools Team Championships’ at the Desert Springs Resort.

Desert Springs Resort, Europe’s only international award-winning luxury family resort and championship desert golf course in the Almanzora region of Almeria in south-east Spain, was host to the inaugural Desert Springs & Millfield European Schools Team Championships between Saturday 15th to Tuesday 18th February 2014.

The Team Championship was open to boys and girls of all ages with a maximum handicap of 24 and was held over 3 days (54-Holes). The tournament format was 4 Ball-Better-Ball Stableford Points on day 1 & 2 with day 3 being the Best two Individual Stableford Points Scores from each Team being combined to achieve the Teams accumulative Stableford score.

Lorreto School Golf Academy Winning Team Members Marcus Crowe, Cameron Blair, Oliver Duley & Yannick Artigolle with (Far Right) Loretto Golf Academy Director of Golf Rick Valentine.

“It’s a great warm up for the season ahead! The practice facilities were excellent and the competition was of a high standard.”

That is the verdict of 18-year-old Marcus Crowe, from the Loretto School Golf Academy based at Scotland's leading Scottish private boarding school, set in 85 acres of leafy campus just outside Edinburgh that provides an all-round education for just over 600 boys and girls aged 3-18.

Loretto School Golf Academy Director of Golf, Rick Valentine commented:

“This was a great event to start off the season. The teams enjoyed their stay and their golf has benefitted from both the competition and practice.”

17-year-old Matthew McClerry, from Bradfield College remarked:

“This was the ideal venue to hold the Schools Championships. Comfortable accommodation, excellent practice facilities, a challenging but enjoyable course and very tasty food! I very much hope that I get the chance to return to Desert Springs, not only next year but later in life as well.”

Colin Burgess, Head of Golf at Bradfield College commented:

“I will be deeply unpopular with my colleagues when I return. I have had a genuine holiday in spectacularly scenic and comfortable surroundings enjoying a very well organized tournament, excellent meals and a lifestyle to which it is all too easy to become accustomed. How soon can I book for next year ?”

Karen Nichols, Millfield School Director of Golf, commented:

“The tournament enables all age groups, levels and standards of golfers to play together. School golf is the future of golf and this event has provided opportunities to all. Desert Springs is a great resort with a great golf course that provides a challenge to all.

15-year-old Alfredo Curbishley, from Millfield School remarked of his experience:

"I thought the accommodation was very nice with the rooms comfortable for everyone. I would like to thank the staff and golf club for hosting this event. It was good fun and the golf course was in great condition!"

Stuart Wells, Millfied School Head Coach remarked:

“The tournament format worked really well. A handicap event where players of all abilities could compete against each other and all be in with a chance of winning. This is just what schools golf needs to help young players gain experience and develop as golfers.”

Richard Miller, from Durham School reported:

"The resort accommodation exceeded our expectations. All of the staff were excellent, they couldn't do enough for us, presentation, friendliness, knowledge, approachability and assistance-10 out of 10 across the board."

Terry Harrison, from Reeds School reported:

"A great start to the golfing season in a super sporting location, lovely to see the sun!"

18-year-old Louis Laville, from Reeds School remarked:

"Very good fun to play on a challenging course outside of the UK!"

17-year-old Jen Vincent, from Reeds School commented:

"I played well on an awesome course! Better than being in England!!"

Hi Natalia

Just a short belated note to say thank you for a fabulous few days my golfing mates and I had there last weekend.

The course was challenging and we enjoyed playing in the sun without rain for a change from over here.

Please extend our thanks to Sandra and Dimitri too.

Sandra very kindly spent time to help us find our keys and phoned our car rental company.

Dimitri was kind enough to get us coffee and cereals before we tee'd off although the restaurant was not open on Sunday morning.

Many thank again and hope to return sometime again.

Kind regards

Bal

Hello,

Thank you for such great service and we really enjoyed our stay at Desert Springs.
The resort is beautifully kept and the apartment has a high standard of quality and cleanliness.
We had a warm and friendly welcome with a nice drink and it was nice that you took our luggage for us.
You also drove us round the resort for a tour, which we really appreciated.
You attended to all our needs at meal times and the food was excellent, with such great variety and well presented.
Unfortunately we got locked out of our apartment and you attended to this very  promptly.
I will definitely recommend to others for a retreat or a holiday as it was indeed very relaxing.

Kind Regards,

Renu

Dear Sandra,

In response to your email I would like to say thank you to all the staff at the resort and how impressed we were with the high level of service we received.

We were delighted with the accommodation and hugely impressed with the service from the restaurant and bar staff…they were excellent..very friendly as was everyone on the golf reception.

I thought the level of service from the caddy master was amazing as when we arrived for a round of golf on sunday morning he already had our clubs on the back of the buggy ready to go…Little things like that really make the difference…please pass my thanks onto him.

We very happy with food and and price..very good value.

I will definitely recommend the resort to friends.

Thanks again,
Ian

We visit Desert Springs regularly and have always found the resort to be excellent.

The accommodation, the cuisine, the golf course and the climate have always been excellent, but even those attributes are surpassed by the service and attention from all members of the staff.

Desert Springs was a wonderful November golfing break with 6 pals.

The villa we stayed in was beautiful with a lovely pool to use and enjoy the sunny weather.

The dining was excellent, facilities first class and clubhouse welcoming.

Their greatest asset is the staff who couldn't do enough for us.

Finally, the golf course is first class.

Having just returned from a recent trip to Desert Springs last week I can confirm I would go back any time and thought the course was fantastic and the facilities first class.

Your staff were all courteous and professional and efficient and the apartment itself was great.

Overall, I would highly recommend the resort to all my friends and hopefully will return soon.

Many Thanks,

“Perfect September Break”

Spent an idyllic two weeks in Desert Springs and are looking forward to planning our next break.

We stayed in a beautiful four bedroomed villa with private pool on Buena Vista.

The villa was immaculate with a very well equipped kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining, BBQ etc (although we were quite lazy and enjoyed leisurely breakfast in the Golf Club every morning).

We had glorious weather and decided to hire a car to explore and enjoy local beaches and restaurants – reception staff made excellent recommendations and were happy to make reservations.

Desert Springs is peaceful, well maintained, golfers paradise and so much else to see and do.

Dear Carmen

Sorry it has taken me a while to write to you following our stay at Desert Springs last month.

Howard and I and Geoff  & Linda Tate all thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and – it was a great pleasure to return to the golf course, which was as usual in excellent condition and to Desert Springs Resort.

Thank you again for the hospitality of all your staff – their friendly and helpful attitude always enhances our visit.

We were very grateful for the use of the other house on Desert Gold on the day of our departure – the flight times this year were not as convenient as before.

The night concierge was very helpful on our arrival and that coupled with the fact that we are now familiar with the resort meant that our late arrival was not really a problem.

The clubhouse remains an excellent facility and we enjoy its comfort and the snacks and meals available.

We hope to return next year at some point and will look forward to our next visit.

Yours sincerely

Carolyn Hall

“A real gem”

We had a 4 day (3 night) trip to Desert Springs.

The villa has been built to an extremely high spec and can only be classed as luxury.

The weather was great in early October and the golf course is quite outstanding.

There is not a single fairway or green which is not in superb condition and the course layout makes for a fantastic round of golf.

We will return here again and again and recommend to all our friends.

Not to be missed.

“Service the Key!!”

Three night golf trip where the service was superb.

Accommodation very acceptable though make sure you take provisions with you if you want anything other than water, coffee and tea etc.

Food and wine choice really good and service from the guys top drawer, notably Ellie (knows her wine) and Mike behind the bar. Dimitri good contact too and very helpful.

Only drawback was pace of golf, be patient, enjoy the weather and you'll be fine.

Lots of high handicappers were on course which also coincided with local competition so at times very slow.

All in all great experience with the standards of service being the key!

Maggie and I spent a fantastic week with Freddie and Tom at Desert
Springs. We were gobsmacked.

To take a desert location and transform it into a living oasis is
verging on the miraculous but what really impresses is the attention to
detail you've lavished on the project, even down to the excellent  Este
wine.

Although we'd heard a bit about Desert Springs from Freddie and
Tom, descriptions and photographs cannot do it justice – you have to be
there to appreciate it. I don't think anyone else will be able to sustain and develop your vision.

We had a brunch and a dinner in the clubhouse both
of which were great, not least because of the quality of the staff and the
exquisite surroundings, where the attention to detail is particularly
noticeable.

Anyway, given the opportunity I'd love to go again. It's a great
location in a beautiful, vibrant area of Spain – not far short of
paradise (particularly with access to a boat). I just wanted to
congratulate you on the successful implementation of a brilliant, visionary
project. Irrespective of the current adverse economic climate, it is a
testimony to your diligent persistence.

A great place for golf fanatics. Beautiful golf course but very tough.

The weather was perfect every day.

We stayed in a villa 11 La Rosa which again was exceptional, very well equipped and lovely views over the 18th fairway,  just a few minutes walk from the club house and the pool was just steps away from the Villa.

The food and wine in the club house was excellent, 3 courses for just 17.50 euros and the standard and presentation was very good.
