GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT’S
NEWS LETTER
December 2015
Dear Member / Property Owner,
Following on from the Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter sent to you in October, which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana Course in November, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in December 2015.
NOVEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE
Hollow Coring Greens
The hollow coring of all the greens on the Indiana course have been successfully completed as per the maintenance program. The green’s playing surfaces have already recovered from this important maintenance procedure.
Hollow Coring and Overseeding Tees
The tees have been scarified, overseeded and topdressed to reduce soil compaction, improve air and water movement throughout the soil profile and enhance the playing surfaces. All the tees surfaces have been completed as per the maintenance schedule.
Annual Golf Course Verti-Cutting and Sand Topdressing Program
The maintenance program of verti-cutting and sand topdressing has been postponed until the spring of next year.
Sprinkler Heads
The raising and leveling of the golf course sprinkler heads will be on going and will take many months to complete.
DECEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM
Verti Draining Fairways
The program of verti-draining (solid tine aerification) the fairways will start in December. This particular aspect of golf course maintenance is both extremely necessary and time consuming, so we ask you to please bear with us until its completion. Disruption to play, as always, will be kept to an absolute minimum.
Bunker Renovation and Turfing
Many of the bunker edges, over time, have lost their definition and need rebuilding with new turf. White half moon metal stakes have been used to identify these areas throughout the golf course. During establishment, these areas will be roped off to help establishment of the new turf.
Green’s Collar Turfing
The Rye grass green’s collars, over time, have become contaminate with different species of grasses that cannot be controlled chemically. This turf grass will be removed mechanically and new Rye grass turf will be placed. Green’s collars 18, 17 and the chipping green are the most affected.
Sprinkler Heads
As a consequence of maintenance topdressing programs, the sprinkler heads gradually over time become lower than the turf playing surface. The golf course maintenance staff will be raising the sprinkler heads to improve irrigation water coverage and uniformity. Please be aware that this schedule of works will continue whilst golfers are playing, however staff will be protected from golf balls by protective netting.
