Golf Course Maintenance

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

‘NEWS LETTER’

DECEMBER 2012

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the ‘The Golf Course Superintendents News Letter’ sent to you in October which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana Course in November, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in December 2012.

NOVEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Bermuda Grass Encroachment

The Men’s Tee 6 and 11, the Ladies Tees 1, 5, 16 and 18 and the Championship Tees of holes 5, 6, and 18 have been turfed. The Championship tee on hole 4 will be seeded to complete this program of works.

Golf Course Rivers

Powder Creek running between holes 5 and 6 continues to dry out. Once dry, the extensive vegetation can be cleared. This is an extremely slow process and will take many months to complete.

Hollow Coring Greens

The program of hollow coring the greens has been completed as per the schedule.

Hole 15th Modification and Temporary Green Notice.

The remodelling work to the new green and green surround has taken place. The newly constructed USGA specification green extension has been turfed with high quality A4 creeping bent grass and is growing in. Two additional green side bunkers have been created to the right hand side of the new green extension. The irrigation system has been updated to accommodate the remodelling works carried out. Heavy rain at the start of the construction period and hitting sheet rock has delayed the topsoiling and turfing of the green surround. However, the green’s putting surface was turfed as per the schedule, which will be the determining factor to when the new complex can be ready for play.

Overseeding 50m Golf Academy Practice Green

The 50m range green has been overseeded and will start to establish during the month.

16th Hole New Fairway Extension

The irrigation sprinkler heads have been lowered and the “GUR” signs have been removed, so that the new fairway extension can be played as golf “rough”. During the following months, the height of cut will be reduced to fairway height.

DECEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Hole 15th Modification and Temporary Green Notice

The remaining work of top soiling, grading and turfing the green surround and approach will take place in December. The temporary green will remain, located before the fairway lake.

Cart Track Staking

The Club has noted a high number of golf carts leaving the allotted cart tracks, causing damage to planting areas and picking up punctures in the desert hardpan, of which the cost of repair, in particular for the latter, is not sustainable. Controlling the movement of the golf carts using rope on top of the existing stakes has been trialed in holes, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13 and 17. Owing to the success of the trial, additional areas where golf carts have been noted to continuously knock over the wooden stakes will also be roped off. Narrower gaps between the stakes for pedestrian golf trolleys will be located.

2013 Greens Hollow Coring Dates

In the knowledge that all Property Owners and Members need to have as much notice as possible concerning particular aspects of the golf course maintenance schedule that may temporarily effect the playing conditions of the greens surface, thus enabling them to plan particular holidays accordingly, please see below the new hollow coring dates for 2013.

Monday 22nd April,

Monday 20th May

Monday 4th November

In Addition the Putting Green, Chipping Green and Driving Range Tee and Greens will be closed for hollow coring on first Wednesday respectively until 3pm.
