Club Captain’s Drive-In
15th April 2022
Dear Member, Owner
Thank you to all those who were able to attend the Club Championship Dinner and so warmly welcomed me into the position as Desert Springs Golf Club Captain. I am really looking forward to my year as Captain at Desert Springs Golf Club and hopefully adding to the “Essence of Desert Springs Golf”, especially as it is the Golf Club’s 21st anniversary.
It was impossible not to get emotional when the money past Captain Phil Webster raised (just under €15k) was presented to Asprodalba, and we realised the difference it was obviously going to make to all those that the charity look after.
I am looking to continue with our support of this local charity as well as one other, which will be announced shortly.
If you are unable to be present for the Drive-In, and I know it is a lot harder to make the journey at the moment than it has ever been, you would be very welcome to make a donation to the charity via the Captain’s Charity Bank Account managed by Richard Fuller, the details are:
Account name: Richard Charles Fuller – Desert Springs Captains Charity

Captain’s Drive-In (Friday 15th April) – Details
All non-golfers are invited to join the non-golf elements of the day.
Thank you to all those who have already entered and booked starting hole tees – the earlier we have an idea of numbers the easier it is for the volunteers who are helping to make the day that much more fun. We are planning to have at least two refreshment stops on the course this year.
If you have already completed an entry form at reception, not all the details published on the first batch of forms were correct, please see below for full details:
The social itinerary for the day is:
- 08:30hrs. – Cave Bar Coffee, Cava, Pastries, Mulligans, Captain’s Drive Flags
- 15hrs. – Captain’s Drive-In
- 14:00hrs. – 16.00hrs. Post Golf Drinks & Tapas, El Torrente, 1st Drink and Tapas €5

Golfing Details are:

If you do not have an RFEG handicap, please present an up to date WHI Handicap certificate. All men with a handicap of 18 or higher can choose to play off the green tees. Please contact either John Haydon or myself if you would like to play off the green tees or do not have an official handicap*.
- Handicap: Men & Ladies 0-54
- Rules: Captain’s Rules for Competition & Handicap apply.
- Prizes: Team 1st, 2nd & 3rd, nearest the pin on each par 3 hole
The theme of the day is “White with a Splash of Colour” which not only gives a nod to my many years playing cricket and looks smart but most importantly should not cost too much as I am hoping that you will be able to focus your expenditure on boosting the money that goes to the Captain’s charities from the outset, bearing in mind the restrictions that have been in place over the last two years. The same theme continues into the evening, with Men requested to wear jackets (not necessarily white) and “whitish” is acceptable with a splash of colour.
At the Cave Bar you will be able to start the day with Cava, Coffee and Pastries and have the opportunity to buy Mulligans and flags from the merry team of “Captain’s Helpers” to mark the resting place of my ball from the “Drive-In” shot, where there is a prize for the closest.
10.00 Shotgun Start
The format for the golf is a “Team Shambles” which is great for every standard of golfer as it consists of picking the best first 2 shots of the team on the par 5’s, the best first shot on the par 4’s and all completing the hole from this position (all play the par 3’s as normal). The best two stableford scores on each hole count towards the team score for the 18 holes.
The golf will be supported by the merry band of helpers out on the course offering snacks and refreshments (if you would like to help either on the course or by providing some food/drink please contact Lynne at dscaptain@btinternet.com). Thank you to those who have signed up already. Charity donations for your consumption will be welcomed.
Following the golf, the Clubhouse will be open for drinks and Tapas until 16.00hrs. with the first drink and tapas being offered at €5.
The evening’s entertainment will be held in El Torrente starting at 18.00hrs. with a meal, followed by the Prize presentation, express raffle and other announcements. The entertainment will be provided the band, Amor Amorfo, and there could be an opportunity to join the band for any aspiring musicians later in the evening for a “jam”.
Raffle Prizes: If you would like to donate a prize for the raffle it would be much appreciated – please contact Lynne (dscaptain@btinternet.com).
I look forward to seeing you all (Golfers and Non-Golfers alike) on Good Friday.
Paul Taylor
