Desert Springs members and home owners, as well as many local golfers from the surrounding area, wholeheartedly supported the opportunity to compete in the company of some of Spain’s most illustrious Senior and Lady professional golfers over 18 holes of tournament golf on the Indiana.
A fully subscribed field of 26 teams, some 104 players, set out on a typically wonderful morning from the 1st and 10th tees to compete in the Pro-Am on the eve of the Spanish Seniors & Ladies Professional Championships.
The decision taken by the official tournament committee for the ball to be played from where it lay in the desert hard pan areas, setting aside the Local Rule of one club length relief, afforded a new challenge to all the amateur players in the field. The results tended to confirm the opinion that the works carried out to date within the desert areas of the golf course are achieving the desired effect!
The best nett score from the 4 players in each team was to count on each hole, with the amateurs receiving their full handicap allowance.
The team of José Maria Garcia Vaillo, Pedro Vicente Buendía & Michael John Davies, captained by professional Manuel Montes Agudo, came home in first place with a very impressive score of 53 stableford points.
Two teams were equal on 52 stableford points, only one point behind the winners! Winning on count back on the second 9 holes were the local team of Hugh Mullins, Paddy Carroll & John Dudley from Desert Springs, captained by professional Juan Rosa Flores.
Third place was taken by Juan Manuel Pérez Moreno, Martín García Pèrez & Antonio Rubio Viciana captained by professional Antonio Garrido.
All competitors enjoyed a buffet lunch in El Torrente restaurant after completion of play and the Mayor of Cuevas del Almanzora, Jesus Caicedo Bernabè, was present to preside over the prize presentation.
