Further to the success of visits in 2017 and 2018, Whitgift School, located in London, South Croydon will be following in the auspicious footsteps of Hampshire CCC & Worcestershire CCC and three Regional Women’s Professional teams by stepping up preparations for their 2023 cricket season by attending a five (5) day pre-season training camp at the Desert Springs Cricket Academy between Saturday 1st – Wednesday 5th April 2023.
A Whitgift education is unique and exceptionally tailor-made, offering a variety of pathways to qualifications with Whitgift’s sport at the forefront of achievement, with over 300 national titles won in the past decade. Many boys represent their country in a wide variety of sports, or go on to pursue a career at the highest level. A passion for sport is evident across all levels with over 1000 students representing the school in over 1500 fixtures annually.
The Whitgift School training camp will comprise Eighty (80) players accompanied by Ten (10) staff, all of whom will be spending their time completing numerous training sessions each day, which will include grass net practice, both bowling and batting and strength, running, speed and agility work at the Cricket Academy.
The squad will also benefit from the Cricket Ground at Desert Springs, incorporating specific practice sessions involving; throw downs, slip catch training and fielding exercises as well as match simulations.
The players and coaches will be accommodated in some of the privately-owned Apartments and townhouses at Desert Springs and the resort’s executive chef will be on hand to cater for the special dietary requirements of individual players dining in the Crocodile Club Restaurant

Seventy one (71) members of the Whitgift School Cricket Squad, accompanied by ten (10) members of staff and coaches are now back in England having completed a successful 4-day pre-season training camp between Tuesday 3rd – Saturday 7th April at Desert Springs Resort, Europe’s only international award-winning luxury family resort and championship desert golf course with its very own dedicated Cricket Ground & Academy, in the Almanzora region of Almeria, Andalucía in south-east Spain.
Neil Kendrick, Whitgift School Head of Cricket Performance remarked of Desert Springs Resort and the training camp;
“This is the second time that we have brought out over 70 junior cricketers to Desert Springs.
Yet again the staff at the resort have gone above and beyond to provide a fantastic cricketing experience.
The addition of the main Oval is the icing on the cake and has meant that we have been able to deliver a true challenging match environment, sincere thanks to all.”
“The boys have enjoyed sensational facilities and the opportunity to train on first-class wickets and the food and service has both been great as always.”
“The boys have thoroughly enjoyed themselves with outstanding facilities and accommodation. A fantastic experience from start to finish.”
Those were the views of Whitgift School Cricket coaches James McCann and Ben Morris, respectively.
The focus of the training camp was to provide an opportunity for the players to both work seriously on their batting and bowling and fielding skills as well as their fitness levels, through a specific and carefully planned programme, to ensure that the players are in the best possible shape leading up to the commencement of the new season.
Grass net practice, both bowling and batting as well as strength and conditioning work, running, speed and agility work took place at the Cricket Academy.
The squad also benefitted from 3-days use of the new Cricket Ground at Desert Springs with a varied programme that incorporated specific practice sessions involving; throw downs, slip catch training and fielding exercises as well as match simulations and matches.
A few of the players views of their experience at Desert Springs Resort during the training camp were;
Matthew Roberts (aged 13 yrs.); “The resort is amazing. The cricket ground enabled us to play excellent cricket!”
Rahul Tangirula (ages 11 yrs.); “An amazing cricket facility. It has been great to get away to a place like this for pre-season. The food and accommodation were also first-class.”
Jaime Player (aged 12 yrs.); “Incredible! Everything I could have wished for for this tour. The food, service and facilities were amazing!”

Whitgift School Complete 2017 Pre-Season Cricket Training Camp |

Whitgift School players are now back in England having completed a successful four (4) days of warm weather pre-season cricket and fitness training between Monday 03rd – Friday 07th April at Desert Springs Resort, Europe’s only international award-winning luxury family resort and championship desert golf course with its very own dedicated Cricket Academy, in the Almanzora region of Almeria, Andalucía in south-east Spain.
Neil Kendrick and Paul Hindmarch, Whitgift School ‘Head of Cricket Performance’ and ‘Head of the Cricket Academy’ respectively, supported by eight (8) staff, accompanied seventy (70) players who completed bowling, batting and fielding practice as well as strength and conditioning training sessions and matches, as they stepped up their physical preparations for the upcoming 2017 season.
Neil Kendrick ‘Head of Cricket Performance’ commented: “Having visited Desert Springs for the last few years with our Golf Team and experienced all that the resort has to offer, I was very excited at now bringing a large group of students for a Cricket Training Camp. Desert Springs has delivered on every aspect, the service levels are just sensational and nothing is left to chance. The children have all had an unforgettable week and we look forward to returning next year!”
The training camp worked on a specific and carefully planned programme covering technical skills, strength and conditioning and both individual and group activity that included golf on the championship Indiana course!

A Whitgift education is unique and exceptionally tailor-made, offering a variety of pathways to qualifications, including A Level, Pre U, the IB and BTEC, with a bilingual section for native French or Spanish speakers.
Whitgift’s sport is at the forefront of achievement, with over 120 national titles won in the past five years. More than 40 sports are available, including modern pentathlon, golf, cricket, judo and cycling. Many boys represent their country in a wide variety of sports, or go on to pursue a career at the highest level.
The Whitgift School team training camp will comprise Seventy (70) players and Twelve (12) staff, all of whom will be spending their time completing numerous training sessions each day, which will include grass net practice, both bowling and batting, strength work, running, speed and agility work. As they will be outside and on grass, the squad will also be able to do fielding and throwing practice in realistic conditions, something not possible indoors back in the UK.
Accommodation for the players and coaches is in some of the privately owned apartments and townhouses at Desert Springs Resort normally reserved for holidays and short breaks and the resort’s executive chef will be on hand to cater for the special dietary requirements of individual players dining in the resort’s Crocodile Club Restaurant.
